The UC Davis field day officially kicked off the judging season on March 4th and 5th. Seven Buhach Colony FFA CDE (Career Development Event) judging teams competed this weekend to sharpen their skills. Those competing included Livestock judging, Dairy Cattle judging, Best Informed Greenhand (BIG), Parliamentary Procedure, Job Interview and Small Engines.
Competing on Friday were the Job Interview and Parliamentary Procedure teams. In the job Interview contest, the competitors were required to complete a given job application in the allotted twenty minutes, have a resume and cover letter prepared and go through a mock interview for an agriculture related job they chose to apply for in front of a panel of judges. Abigail Douglas, Brittany Perry, Kristina Ramos and Gabby Samaniego competed with Brittany Perry taking 7th overall. This team did a great job and will be working on ways to still improve their skills before the next competition.
During that time the Parliamentary Procedure teams were across campus vigorously competing for a spot in the final round. Those members of the Parli Pro team are required to debate and decide upon various motions brought forth by the team members following the protocol set by Roberts Rules of Order. The team prepares by studying the proper ways in which to run a meeting accurately using the rules of parliamentary law. The Advanced team held up against some extremely competitive teams and had an excellent performance but fell short of advancing to the final round. The team returned home with a desire to improve and took all the critiques they had received into consideration and will be ready for the next competition. Those competing on the Advance team include: Aaron Bettencourt, Bailey Malone, Morgan Malone, Madyson Paschall, Kathleen Stalnaker, Shannon Stalnaker, and Angelina Ybarra.
Given Friday’s stellar performance, Saturday proved to be even better. To begin, the Small Engines team took 8th place after troubleshooting a given engine with a problem, identifying commonly used parts and tools and taking a written exam. Colby Carter, Derek Hightower, and Samuel Her makeup the talented team and are looking forward to the Chico State Field Day, hoping for back to back wins! Over at the Farm, the Livestock judging teams were busy judging various classes of live animals and preparing their oral reasons which they presented to different officials, hoping for a score as close to 50 as possible. The seven members of the Livestock judging team including Abigail Douglas, Kilee Carrera-Gillard, Gauge McMullen, Madyson Paschall, Brittany Perry, Paige Rahn, and Tanner Torell. The team ended up 6th high team overall, placing 4th in subscore for beef, 9th in sheep and goats, 7th in swine and 8th in reasons.
To round out the day, the Best Informed Greenhand (BIG) team including Jordan DelWorth, Karlee King, Felicity Machado, Kathleen Stalnaker, and Jacob Trindade also competed and although they were just out of the top 10, performed extremely well. These members have been studying very diligently to learn all that they can about the FFA organization and all that it involves to prepare for the 200 question test that includes true/false, multiple choice, fill in the blank and matching questions in the allotted time. We are definitely looking forward to the Chico & Le Grand Field Days on March 12th and wish all of those working so hard to prepare a successful day!
