Three speaking contestants from Buhach Colony FFA qualified to compete in
the regional speaking contest held on February 11th at Pitman High School in Turlock, CA. Those competing had already made it through previous rounds
at the sectional level - placing in the top four. At this Regional
Competition, participants were eager to once again compete for the chance
to earn a spot in the competition later that day in the Regional finals with the hope from there of moving on to the state level competition.
Participating in the Prepared Public Speaking contest Maggie Homen and Madison Homen did a great job presenting their 6-8 minute speeches that they personally wrote, memorized, and delivered to a panel of judges, being knowable enough on the topic to answer any of the questions the judges might ask them in the five minute questions round that immediately followed their presentations. Madison Homen delivered a powerful speech pertaining to the serious decline in new blood coming into the industry due to the extreme generation gap that has emerged. She focused on the persuasive groups that have emerged and spread negative and untrue information to the 98% of Americans that are not directly involved in the agriculture industry. These groups have been instrumental in creating the problematic generational gap we now see amongst those involve in production agriculture. Maggie Homen also did an excellent job delivering a speech on a topic she is extremely passionate about, as the regulations imposed by CARB (California Air Resource Board) have had a significant impact on her families trucking business as well as the agriculture industry as a whole. Both speeches were truly delivered from the heart and their passion and interest in the future of agriculture was evident in their performance. They did a great job and Maggie was awarded the opportunity to compete in the final round placing 7th overall.
Also competing that day was Kelsey Coane on the Job Interview Team. Kelsey demonstrated exceptional interviewing skills as she completed a job application within a 20 minute allotted time frame, brought a prepared resume and cover letter and presented herself in a mock interview in front of a panel of judges for a job opening within the Ag industry as a Veterinarian. Her knowledge of the industry as well as her manner, exceptional public speaking skills and excellent presentation allowed her to give an amazing performance with many positive compliments from each of the judges.
We are extremely proud of each of the speaking competitors and applaud
their hard work, dedication and determination for success The Central Region is composed of some of the most talented individuals making for some serious competition. We are extremely proud that each of these individuals were awarded the opportunity to compete in these upper level competitions and look forward to all of their future successes.
