February 22nd -26th marks one of the greatest weeks for FFA members across the nation, National FFA Week! Given that there are over 500,000 members nationwide, the impact of the FFA organization is portrayed in so many different ways by each chapter on their own campus. During this week, FFA chapters work hard to promote what they have to offer, display their accomplishments, encourage future involvement and most of all, have a little fun in the agricultural way! As the FFA organization is one that prides itself on personal growth, leadership development and career success, our goal was to help educate others on some of the many areas for involvement within the program that can assist them in reaching their goals and true potential.
At Buhach Colony High School, the Ag leadership class worked very diligently to prepare a fun filled educational week for all students and staff. Looking back we can safely say, FFA week on our campus was a success. There were different noon time activities to participate in each day that really brought the students on campus together to celebrate, as well as different themed dress up days. This year on our campus, Monday February 22nd officially kicked off FFA week as the students came to school dressed in pink, to get students thinking about the awesome and new noontime activity, the Greased Pig Dressing. During lunch time, some of our teachers and administrators were given a little taste of the livestock lifestyle and competed in BC FFA’s first annual Greased Pig Dressing where they were challenged to catch one of the baby pigs running frantically lose only then to dress it in a pair of fashionable underwear. The show was a great sight for all and it was a ton of fun! The animal fun didn’t end there, Tuesday all were dressed in “Extreme Blue and Gold” to pay tribute to the official FFA colors of National Blue and Corn Gold. That day at lunch many different staff members participated in the second annual Goat Showdown. Five BCHS staff members tried their best to show the goats that were brought to campus and were judged as if at a county fair, and given a critique by our student judge and, of course, were awarded prizes! Mr. Bliss was awarded 1st place- making him a two time back to back showmanship champion, Mr. Knott, BCHS Associate Principal, came in a close 2nd, and rounding out the top 3 was one of FFA week’s biggest supporters, Coach Ben! It was a sight to be seen by all in attendance for sure! Wednesday made everyone think they were seeing double, as students dressed up to “twin” with someone else. At lunch, some special sets of “twins” were ready for a fierce game of corn hole at lunch, and fierce might be an understatement! After school on that day, our FFA chapter also hosted the monthly FFA meeting and enjoyed some delicious tacos after the business meeting concluded. The week of fun didn’t end there. Our campus got a special entertainment treat as we took a step back in time on “decade day” and listened to some of our Teacher and student groups perform in the lip sync. This event drew quite the crowd as they were eager to see the results of the judges to see who would be crowned the winners. To round out the week, the final day of our celebration brought about one of our most entertaining events yet. Numerous teachers participated in the annual BC FFA Cowboy Olympics, and the competition showed us who was really rootin’ tootin’ tough! As all gathered in the amphitheater in their best western wear, we witnessed 4 different teams of staff members race through our obstacle course, bucking hay, milking a glove, finding the “needle” in the hay stack, chugging some ice cold milk, then finally bottle feeding the cutest and friendliest little calf you have ever seen! Everyone had a blast and it will be a week not soon forgotten.
As Buhach Colony FFA has a membership total that exceeds 400, or presence was definitely evident on campus during FFA week, and we hope all BCHS students enjoyed the different activities and dress up days. We are definitely looking forward to next year, and hope to encourage and inspire other to get involved with the program and seize all the wonderful opportunities available.
